The Documentary Film
In the mountains of Western North Carolina, legendary ballad singer Donna Ray Norton follows the echo of her grandfather’s fiddle, uncovering a musical legacy on the brink of fading away.
The Archive
Nearly two years of research for the film has uncovered thousands of deteriorating photographs, negatives, and recordings. The project now includes the creation of a digital archive dedicated to preserving the musical heritage of Western North Carolina.
The Film Synopsis
Set in the mountains of Western North Carolina, this film follows Donna Ray Norton, granddaughter of renowned Appalachian fiddler Byard Ray, as she traces her family’s musical legacy. A pioneer of traditional music, Byard reinterpreted fiddle and banjo tunes passed down across eight generations, reaching back to a time before recorded music, shaping a sound that carried from remote mountain communities to stages across the United States and Europe. Through intimate performances, raw field recordings, and stories passed down through the community, Donna’s journey reveals a legacy still unfolding. Their story speaks to the resilience of Appalachian traditions and the enduring connection between music, memory, and place.
Support for this project has been provided through fiscal sponsorship from the Madison County Arts Council and funding from the Center for Rural Strategies.
